Discussing Civil Unions in New Zealand
Well, I guess I should post an intro since I created this community. My name is Kari- I'm 24 & live in Dunedin. I started the community because I wanted to talk with others about civil unions and share ideas. My partner Mikey (baanana_pie) & I are considering obtaining a civil union. I've never really liked the idea of marriage - I have no religious connections with it, and I don't really like what I have seen of the concept of marriage throughout history (I'm something of a social history geek). |
We see a civil union as a way to avoid all those connotations but have our defacto relationship strengthened more than it currently is. I also really don't like the whole wedding industry - the expensive traditions & expectations that so many people worry about where the real reason for the event is forgotten. Weddings are fine for those who want them, but I prefer simplicity, and don't like spending money on things that have inflated prices merely because they are wedding-related.
I also really like the idea of being able to be one of the first to obtain a civil union and be able to create the sort of ceremony Mikey & I want rather than following what other people have done - so we can personalise it and make it more meaningful.
Right, I guess that'll do for my intro for now..
